THE POETIC GENESIS OF SIMON’S ARTWORKS

The word of an artist, like Simon was, lives within his sculptures because they are born from a spontaneous poetic vibration, from a dawn-like impulse that the artist felt since childhood. Together with his botanist grandfather, among grass and flowers he would gaze in awe at the first little plants with few leaves that were trying to open up and create a passage towards the light: driven by that original impulse that nature possesses, and which Simon unleashes through his iron sculptures.

When Simon Benetton used his blowtorch to bring the grey matter of iron into life, his creative fervor was composed of words that resonated in harmony with the fiery essence of the expressive medium.
In fact, his sculptures are identified by verses that are poetic metaphors, as they encapsulate the ideal aspirations of the secret pulsation of lines and forms that expand in space.

Verses written like visual weaves of a linear journey that often recalls the open or closed form of the sculptures: visible signs of the invisible spirit that treats matter as if it were the poetic diaphragm of the inexhaustible flow of inventive consciousness.

The word, like a rosy flame in Simon’s poetry, is the same hand moving through space to unveil, aided by the blowtorch, the mysterious amphitheaters of time and space, the secret harmonies of an ancient life among woods and plants turned green thanks to golden lights and brushed by the music of the Tramontana (north wind).

Simon’s thought sought the metaphorical diversion of the divine spirit and erected iron cathedrals as structural and linear essences that conquer space in every direction.

Uno dopo l’altro

Uno dopo l'altro
e dopo ancora un altro.

Anche loro ci sono
tutti
anche noi giochiamo
nello spazio
della storia.

Gioca la luce

Gioca la luce
creando un nero esercito.

Tu scherzi con la vita
ignorando il pianto
dell'aria umida e stanca
della solitudine.

Strato

Strato
dopo strato
spessore
dopo spessore
riappare l'orizzonte
del tempo remoto.

Là, sotto,

Là, sotto,
in fondo,
sotto di tutto,
la memoria
lentamente
si gela.

Un segno

Un segno
dopo l'altro
trafora
l'infinito spessore
della libertà.

L’orizzonte bagnato

L'orizzonte bagnato
dalla luce del tramonto
svela il rimpianto
del passato.

Coraggio di vivere

Coraggio di vivere,
fermo, immobile
nel tuo buio
inerte vegeti
nel sogno.

Cruda metamorfosi
spingi, allontana
l'infinita oscurità.

Custode geloso

Custode geloso,
chiuso
compatto
impenetrabile,
parli, canti, suoni, sudi,
ora respiri la tua Libertà.
Ma
io
ho liberato
il bisso
dal ferro.

Nell’oscurità

Nell'oscurità
del tempo
gioca l'ombra
delle immagini
l'aria ormai densa
avvolge
i ricordi
in un'armonia
quietata.

Non sei solo

Non sei solo,
ascolta
il
leggero passo,
nell'aria sottile
si fonde
il profumo
del respiro
segreto
della vita,
non sei più
solo.

Orme del tempo vissuto

Orme del tempo vissuto
levigate
dall'acqua
dal vento
dal sole
le antiche pietre
confidano
i loro segreti
alla luna.

Corre

Corre
nello spazio
il filo
del pensiero.
Corre
come segno
preciso
della vitalità
dell'idea.
L'idea
diventa
segno.

Nel rigido silenzio

Nel rigido silenzio
il sudore
lucida
il viso smarrito
le tracce
dei ricordi
sfiorate
dal leggero raggio
di sole
si perdono
nella pesante coltre
del tempo
l'ultimo filo
di luce
gioca
con il fiore
dell'ironia della morte.

Si estende l’orizzonte

Si estende l'orizzonte
nel confuso raccordo
tra cielo e terra
il manto bianco
della neve
amalgama
l'ispida terra
la gioia vive
negli occhi
dei bambini
per un istante
anche i grandi
rivivono l'infanzia.

Quando ritorno

Quando ritorno
gioco sempre
con loro
nella cornice
dei ricordi
ritrovo
il sapore
delle pagine
autentiche
con il fiato
carico
di gioia
riscopro sempre
il nascondiglio
dei segreti
angoli della
vita.

Orme del tempo

Orme del tempo
vissuto
giocarono
con la luce
del sole
ora
i frammenti
di civiltà antica
levigati
dall'acqua
dal vento
dal sole
confidano
alla luna
i loro segreti.

Simon’s poems are not a commentary on his sculptures, but often precede his sculptural work.
Therefore, we can certainly assert that his poetic work represents an element of profound emotional intensity that helps us deeply understand his fundamental and prestigious contribution to the field of Venetian and international sculpture.

We mean to say that Benetton’s sculptures are the result of an engaging quest to transcend impeccable craftsmanship and create a figurative language as a Dwelling of the World’s Being.

In 1967, Simon Benetton created an iron artwork titled “Genesi”. A significant title that naturally evokes the Origin of Creation or, if we may paraphrase Heidegger, the Original Utterance, the Word that becomes flesh, light, darkness.

In every Christian lies the doubt that everything ultimately ends in Eternal Nothingness, the anguish of having believed in the infinite dimension of the Absolute, the God of peace and forgiveness.
This is when sculpture becomes Will to believe, the Golden Nativity Event surrounded by the mandala of a perfect circle, or it alludes, with massive and fragmented forms, to Dante’s Inferno and the condition of modern man.
